Graphical Flora

Graphical Flora
: A Visual Grammer
THESIS STATEMENT

My research paper examines how visual communication can address environmental issues like global warming, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution. This form of communication emphasizes the importance of public awareness and participation in sustainability and environmental conservation. It also explores the powerful effectiveness of various environmentally focused visual materials in delivering environmental messages.

My thesis, Graphical Flora: A Visual Grammar, takes the form of a visually driven graphic design project, focusing on analyzing and reinterpreting plant forms, primarily tropical, carnivorous, and aquatic species, through experimental design techniques. My purpose is not to communicate environmental messages directly; the project explores the visual language of nature to create an aesthetic and emotional experience. It emphasizes the beauty, complexity, and geometric structure of plant forms, pushing the boundaries of visual experimentation as a tool for conceptual exploration. The thesis is structured as a four-page design exploration for each plant, consisting of a graphic illustration of the plant's form, structural analysis through diagrammatic breakdowns, visual reinterpretation using modular and fractal systems, and an expressive graphic composition focused on color, texture, and transformation.

My research paper and thesis both show the connection between visual material and nature. Both works ultimately spark people’s curiosity and create the possibility for that to lead to engagement. My research paper explains campaigns that deliver real environmental messages; however, my thesis project does not directly convey an environmental message. Instead, it develops engaging visuals that spark curiosity about nature. This kind of visual development provides a visual experience of nature and expands the concept of environmental messaging.
